Sweet Fabric Flower Tutorial

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! Sorry I have not posted in a while, but I had my large family here for Christmas and was busy cleaning and cooking on top of my usual Christmas prep. I should be able to post more regularly when school starts again in January. Watch for giveaways on January 1 and a challenge for the Crop Out Diabetes fundraiser with a prize at the end of January.

Today I am sharing a sweet little flower I made with fabric scallops and my Cricut. More obsessing over scallops! Flowers are so trendy right now. You can scrap with them, make a brooch, and accessorize a hat or a purse and more. But, for many of us money is tight this time of year and every extra penny is put into gifts for loved ones. So, I dipped into my stash and played with making my own flower using some pink organza & white card stock. Here’s how I did it:

1) Cut 13 Circles in the Organza using a Sizzix Die 2 ½” big, and if you are superstitious, cut 2 extra.
2) Fold the circles in half and run a basting stitch along the raw edge, ¼” from the edge. Pull the basting to 1” long on 5 of the circles, ¾” long on 5 more, and ½” on the last 3. Tie knots to hold in place.


3) Cut a pentagon at 1 ½”, 1 ¼” and a triangle a 1”. I used Cricut and SCAL2 to get accurate and equal sided shapes. I am not sure if there is a pentagon in any of the Cricut cartridges, so I used SCAL2.

4) Heat up a glue gun and glue 5 petals on each of the pentagons, using the bigger petals for the bigger pentagon and the smaller petals for the smaller pentagon

5) Glue the remaining 3 petals (1/2”) to the triangle. Here is a picture of the three layers with the scallops all glued.

6) Glue or stitch the layers together with the raw edges of the petals facing up, to back the next layer. Alternate the petals on the pentagons to make the flower appear fuller.
7) Embellish with a pretty button.
If you hope to use this as a pin or fashion accessory you may want to consider replacing the card stock with felt or chipboard.

How to Save a Cut When Your Paper Lifts Up Mid Cut

I wanted to share a technique I use when my paper lifts of my mat while cutting and causes a ruined cut. This happens when your mat is losing it's stickiness and sometimes when your blade is going dull. I will share my technique in the SCAL2 and then on the Gypsy.
SCAL 2 method:
If you notice that your paper is lifting off the mat you must
1) Immediately hit the Pause button
2) Unload the paper by hitting the Unload Paper Button on your Cricut Machine.
3) Carefully re-smooth your paper back to the mat removing any paper debris that is unnecessary and or causing problems with the cut
4) Place your mat back in the machine and hit the Load Paper button on your Cricut.
5) Hit Resume Cutting
This may require a bit of hand snipping with your scissors at the end of the cut. It does not work every time, but it is worth a try to save your paper and cut! Sometimes you only have one piece of the your favorite paper and cannot get more so give this a try. Also, if you machine is known to drag the blade when loading this technique may not work.
Gypsy method:
If you notice that your paper is lifting off the mat you must

2) Unload the paper by hitting the Unload Paper Button on your Cricut Machine.
3) Carefully re-smooth your paper back to the mat removing any paper debris that is unnecessary and or causing problems with the cut

Another tip, is that you can tape your paper to the sides of the mat in the green area with scotch tape. If your cut is lifting in the center of the cut you can try temporary adhesive on the back of your paper.
These suggestions are not the ideal. It is best to keep your mats clean or purchase a new one. But sometimes we crafters work late into the night and and looking for a solution to a problem.

Moxie Fab Tuesday Trigger

Did you see this week's Tuesday's Trigger at Moxie Fab World? Love it! This is not my color pallet of choice but it was so beautiful. I wanted to play along, but needed a push. So, when I received my sisters Christmas card I found my inspiration.


Some other things that inspired me were my Paper Crafts Magazine. They had an Ask the Experts segment on using white space. This is NOT my mode of operation! I am a space filler! Must be my large family upbringing! I am more comfortable with embellishments filling my empty space. But I think white space well done is beautiful! I think that is why I love Moxie Fab World, they has an impeccable sense of design and understand less is more!

And my final inspiration was the new rhinestone feature in SCAL2. Love it! I pulled up a swirly circle someone shared in SCAL community a while ago that I loved and added the rhinestones via the Object menu. So easy! I then loaded my Chomas pen holder with a pink pen and "cut" with the pen. I used the rhinestones I had and when I ran out filled the circles with my Stickles. This technique is a great LOOK for LESS!!! I tried to finish each swirl in one color and repeat each color at least once, so the whole swirl looked planned. Try using a few larger rhinestones in the middle of your swirls for a expensive designer look too! You know they say necessity is the mother of invention, I think it is the mother of beautiful art as well!

Our Lego Nativity: Thanks Cheryl!

The weather is terrible today and it is too brutal to send the boys out to play. So, I pulled out our Make it Monday craft idea a day early. I splurged on the Muji Lego paper punch at the Felt Cafe at Etsy and wanted to make a stepped Nativity scene with the boys and their Legos. So, I googled Nativity SVG and found a stepped card at Cheryl's blog. I cut our scene with white card stock and we used white Legos. The punch comes with a template, and the punch has only one hole. You cannot get very far into the page with this punch, so you may have to do a little playing to get a a large Lego shape. So, thanks Cheryl for the stepped Nativity SVG!

December's Featured Etsy Blogger is: Pruitthandcrafts

December's featured Etsy blogger is Pruitthandcrafts! Like many of us, Linda likes more than one medium. She has quilts, jewelry, embellishments and more at three Etsy stores. They are Pruitthandcrafts, Pruittdesigns, and Pruittsupply. My favorite item is this sweet bag. I love the details of the hand crocheted flower and the bias tape leaf, the shape is so appealing! Her profile says she is a breast cancer survivor and Grandmother to 25. I noticed she follows about as many blogs as I do. I think I like her already!

Advent Calendar 2

Just had to share my second Advent calendar I made to sell at my Etsy shop. I love being able to fill an Advent calendar with something I know my kids like that is not candy! I think other parents will too and why not have a pretty one? There are other calendars available on Etsy, so to set mine apart I did several things: I decorated the back and added a photo holder. So many people have kitchen islands these days, so I thought it would be nice to have the option of displaying either side, or being able to turn it after the kids have opened their daily box. And two, I decorated the top with a swirl or a fancy shape.

December Daily Cover & Mini Album Cover File to Share

I created and cut this file for my December Daily Cover. It would make the perfect cover for any Mini Album. Don't you love a peek a boo cut?! HERE is the SCUT version. I am still waiting for my cover to be published so I can share my photos. I found out it was supposed to be published on the 3rd, but it still not up. So, I will share my screen capture only. If you use a double sided paper, you can fold back the scallops for a trim look.

Do You Give Your Best Work Away too?

Just going through some older photos looking for quilts I made to apply for a design team and came across these pictures. They are not my best photos, and I have gotten much better about photographing my work. But I do what a lot of my crafting friends do and give away my best work to family, friends and loved ones. So, I can't retake the photos, and I realized there are several quilts I did not take pictures of. I am usually so excited when they are finished to give them and see their reaction.
It has been a busy day, putting up the Christmas tree & I thought I might share these. The first is a baby quilt in the bargelo style, the red and black quilt is a pineapple block (I think I got the pattern from Better Homes and Gardens Quilting), and the last is a log cabin with side details influence by the Buggy Barn Quilt Shops work.

My Prize Winning Secrets!

In the past few years I have become addicted to online scrap booking give aways and challenges. And I have been lucky! Some of the prizes I have won: a scrapmabob (drink holder with garbage for crops), a Martha Stewart Cake Cartridge, a mini album, a stamp set, some Bell Blvd items, a Pet Scrap book kit. So, what are my secrets?
1) The Cricut Message board-find lots of giveaway links in the Cricut Chat Section & RAK & Swaps. RAK stands for Random Acts of Kindness.
2) Facebook-Do a search for all of your favorite companies and like their pages. The post giveaways their all the time. You will need to set up a Facebook account to like another page. This actually has become my best source for give aways!
3) For blogs with regular give aways, subscribe to posts. For example, Everyday Cricut usually has weekly give aways and daily posts. Your chances increase if you leave a comment on each daily post. So, you want to know every time the post and then you can make a comment and enter. Look for subscribe to post at the bottom of the blog. This will generate an email to you every time they post to the blog.
4) For Challenges: Visit Craft Crave and click on the Craft Categories tab to see a list of current challenges. You can also subscribe to posts on blogs with regular challenges. For example, Etsy Inspired Challenges posts a weekly challenge with prizes. And if you did not win my last drawing, you can watch for my next prize at the Etsy Inspired Challenge blog December 11th, 2010. You could win the scrapbag at the top of the post and never lose your spatula again!
5) It's ok to follow to win. Most blogs are trying to generate income by blogging or promoting their product on a blog. So, if they want followers and often require this for entry into a contest. It is ok to follow. No email is generated by following, and they will only get your email address if it is listed on your Google account. Now if you want to see all the blogs you follow and if they are holding a contest, you will want to subscribe to them and choose follow in Google reader. Then go to Google reader daily or often and read the headlins of the blogs to see what you which blogs you want to visit.
6) If you leave contact information you will want to type in your address in the following manner to be safer "jsmith at hotmail dot com" This will prevent malware and spy ware programs from automatically finding your address and infecting your computer.
7) Create a contest or junk mail email account. If you are entering contest you will be asked by quite a few to provide an email address and then you will get all their online promotional emails. So, create a free account at hotmail, or yahoo and use that address instead of your personal address for these contests. But don't forget to check this address for contest information!

December Daily Updates

I have been making a few additions to my December Daily Album. This is a project that Ali Edwards does every year, and this year Scrapbooks Etc. is on board. They've started a online December Daily project, where you can see Ali's DD and every other scrapper who has shared a link. There are many wonderful ideas out there. Some of the ideas I incorporated are the lace card stock on overheads, and clear page pockets. I used some lace card stock to cover a sticker protector sheet that I cut up, and filled it with recipes that we will use on Make Mondays. One son wants Rice Krispie Wreaths and the other some Ginger cookies Grandmas makes.

I have also made an envelop to hold this years Christmas card. I am so excited about our card this year! My six year old entered a contest at the YMCA over the summer and he won!
His card, pictured above, (along with 4 others) has been published and is for sale! Funds raised go to benefit the Voluntary Action Center of DeKalb, which brings meals on wheels to all the local home bound. So, I skipped our usual picture card and am sending these this year. I created an envelope out of heavy card stock in the same paper line as my DD cover and added some circles and eyelets so that we could wrap and close the envelop and open to look at the card. I journaled on the back and added a tab punched out at the side.
I added some stamped images, Mary and Jesus on Christmas is a Close to My Heart set I used a crop that belongs to a friend (don't know the name of the set). The damask image is Inkadinkadoo.

I will be working on some Cricut cuts for the DD next. I would like a snowflake for the first snowfall (usually by December 6th around here). And will look through my Christmas cart for more inspiration.

Work the Stash Wednesday! Fabric & Garland

I had so much fun with my last Work the Stash Wednesday that I decided to do it again! This time I worked on a Santa page & am submiting it to a new challenge blog I found ABC DT Challenge. So, we all have stashes, what's the big deal? My goal was to use items older than a year, for which I did not have a scrap booking use and include sewing so I could enter the challenge. From my stash I pulled the red felt in the flower, the pink organza in the scallops (inside the circle) and the red star garland.
How did I make the scallops? Well I got out my Sizzix Circle dies and cut up a bunch of circles. I folded them in half and basted a stitch along the raw edge about 1/4" away from the edge.
I pulled the stitch to gather the thread, so that it was about an inch long and tied a knot.
I then glued them to my circle with my hot glue gun.

The felt flower was made with my Heartfelt Creations Dies and Stamps. I cut the felt with the die. Stamped the felt with some black Staz On, covered the stamped lines with liquid glass and sprinkled it with Martha Stewart red glitter. I then beaded the center.

A Tuesday Treat: Maple Pumpkin Butter

For the past few years I have made a batch of Maple Pumpkin Butter and given it to my children's teachers for Thanksgiving. Along with the Maple Pumpkin Butter, I usually make a card saying how thankful we are for them. Here is a photo of this years jar. I used my Tim Holtz Rosette, my Stampin Up Carved & Candlelit stamp set and some ribbon from Michaels. I did not have a pumpkin stamp that would fit inside my circle, so I used a portion of the image and wrote my title by hand.
The recipe is from the Parade magazine that you find in you Sunday paper and is a few years old.
Maple Pumpkin Butter
Ingredients
29 oz Pumpkin puree (unsweetened)
3/4 c Brown Sugar
3/4 c Apple Cider
3/4 c Maple Syrup
1 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1 1/2 tsp Ginger
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients and put in a large heavy oven and stove proof casserole. Cook over med-low heat on stove top to boil. Reduce to low and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring during the entire cooking process. Slide casserole into oven and cook. Stir every 15 minutes with a total cook time of 1 1/2 to 2 hours. This is great for getting a squash into your picky eaters too! You will love how the house smells! Cool and refrigerate. Will keep one week in the fridge.

December Daily 2011

I saw the December Daily album in my latest Scrapbooks Etc and loved the idea. It has two of my obsessions in it, scrap booking and a calendar! I have a planner addiction. So, I thought on it a while and decided that it would be fun to do this year. My children will only be young for so long and Christmas is so magically to them still. So, why not journal about it?
Above is my base page, find more examples here. I used my Autumn Leaves "Messy Dates" and created the rest of the page from Ali's design with my own Microsoft word.
Another reason this appeals to me, is that I want to be more diligent in teaching my children about my faith. Christmas is the perfect time to do so! So, I have also decided to handle it like my summer schedule. I will have a theme for each day:
Make it Monday: Make gifts, holiday foods, etc.
Try it Tuesday: Make and try holiday foods like Stolen, green bean casserole, etc.
Why Wednesday: Talk with the boys about why I believe, why we have certain traditions, etc. December 1st is a Wednesday, and I have the luxury of scrapping the back of my December Daily cover to fit my Wednesday theme, "Why!" I save old Christmas cards and recycle them into gift tags, cards, and scrapbook pages. The picture at the top of the post is created from a card I saved.
Think About it Thursday: Work with the boys to think of others in need at this time of year and how we can help.
Family Friday: Time for just family game night or special event
Savior Saturday: while the Christmas season is magical, it is not the center of the Christian faith. I want to remind my children of the importance of the rest of the story! What happened on Good Friday, and Easter!
Scripture Sunday: Share parts of the story from the bible to correlate with Church services.

Advent Calendar: Thanks Christie!

So, this week I met Christie Hund from Creations by Christie to scrap. She is such a talented and generous artist! She helped me finish up my latest project and knew all the right details to give it that finished look. Thanks Christie!

Now on to the project at hand. This is a Karen Foster Christmas Countdown calendar that I found at Archivers at the end of the Christmas season last year. I have used Basic Grey Eskimo Kisses. The top of the calendar is a cut file I got free at SVG cuts. Have you subscribed to their newsletter yet? They share free cut files regularly.
I just have to give you a close up of the drawer for December 25th. Look who arrives then!

More Moxie Fab World Challenge Zippers

Sometimes when the inspiration starts, it keeps going. So, I am adding a second entry to the Moxie Fab World Challenge Zippers. You see, we crafters are a funny bunch, splurging on somethings and saving on others. So, I had to find a use for all those zipper pulls, didn't I? And since we are in the Christmas mode, how about the center of a snowflake? You could also use these in a flower on a card, or a star.


So, here is my snowflake. And I have to confess, I am a space filler! And a bit of a bling addict. But if you can't go all out for Christmas pages, when can ya!? I had this Sparkle blue paper in the stash for a while. It is labeled on the back Kodak Paper, Sparkle blue. It reminds me of carnival rides. It just did not look good with any of my paper until I got out the DCWV Glitter stack. The bling is from Want2Scrap, Oriental Trading and Queen and Co. The green paper is Creative Imaginations.

The stamp is once again Fiskars Lil Davis Remember This. I have to tell you this stamp set is the best $3.00 I ever spent! I got it at the Scrapbucks booth at the Scrapbook Expo, in St. Charles. But don't worry Scrapbucks has an online store. I love that I have a beautiful journaling block that's, well quite frankly, small. I am willing and able to journal so much more now that I have these stamps!
